Helpful Information
Delta Meat Deli is committed to providing travelers with access to high-quality meat products within Botswana for their excursions through the Okavango Delta. To facilitate your journey, we ensure that meat products are pre-frozen for your convenience.

Botswana is predominantly classified as a green zone, signifying its freedom from foot and mouth disease, with the exception of the Ngamiland/North-West District, designated as a red zone. It is anticipated that travelers will traverse this red zone en route to the Okavango Delta.

Within the red zone, restrictions prohibit the removal of meat products. However, upon entry from a green zone, travelers are permitted to bring poultry, beef, processed game meat, processed dried meat products, and cooked meat.

Conversely, upon exiting the red zone and re-entering green zones, stringent regulations apply due to concerns surrounding foot and mouth disease. Products derived from cloven-hooved animals, including beef, lamb, mutton, pork, and game meat, are strictly prohibited. Furthermore, raw meat products, such as rump, mince, boerewors, and burger patties, are ineligible for transportation. Only processed products from cloven-hooved animals, such as biltong, spareribs, bacon, ham, and pastrami, are permissible. Non-cloven hooved animal products, such as poultry and fish, may be transported from red to green zones.

We advise travelers to adhere to veterinary regulations at all entry and exit points within red zones. These checkpoints entail footwear disinfection, vehicle sanitization, and potential cooler box inspections. Prominent checkpoints include Makalamabedi Gate for travelers en route to Maun from Serowe, Letlhakane, or Rakops, and a checkpoint after Kuke for those arriving from Namibia. Additional checkpoints, like the one to Shakawe, are primarily operational during instances of foot and mouth outbreaks.

When journeying from Maun to the Chobe or Kasane region via the tar road, restrictions on cloven-hooved animal products persist. However, travelers en route to Kasane through Moremi, Savute, or Chobe are granted the liberty to transport any meat products. A buffalo fence demarcates this route, yet travelers are not subject to inspection at this point. Quarantine facilities along the route ensure the health and safety of livestock from red zones, subjecting them to a 30-day observation period before transportation.

Crossing the border from South Africa to Botswana permits the importation of canned goods, sauces, spices, baked goods, and fully processed meat products exclusively. Raw or lightly processed meats, dairy products, fresh fruits, and vegetables are prohibited. Nonetheless, travelers need not fret, as numerous grocery stores, including our deli shop in Maun, offer a wide array of products compliant with these regulations.
